We may see the following historic characteristics if studying or reviewing march 1st movement that occurred in Hwasu-ri, Wujeong-myun, Suwon: First, the resistance held in Hwasu-ri was something different from the other resistances in march 1st movement in that the Japanese police station was destroyed and burned and Japanese police men were killed by the group of Korean resisters, so it is highlighted in terms of resistance history.
Second, it showed the characteristics of being participated in by nearly all residents in the areas of Wujeong-myun and Jangan-myun. The number of total households was recorded to be about 2,400 in the areas of Wujeong-myun and Jangan-myun at that time and about 2,500 residents were recorded as participating in the resistance. In this regard, the resistance held in Hwasu-ri may be construed as the representative one as being participated in by all residents; the residents in the areas of Sokpo-ri, Jugok-ri and Suchon-ri played the core role in the resistance.
Third, the resistance held in Hwasu-ri also showed the characteristic of being participated in by the consolidated group of all religious forces. It showed the figure consolidated by the diverse religious forces such as the Confucian forces in the areas of Sokpo-ri, Jugok-ri, Chondoism and Christian forces in the area of Suchon-ri and some Catholic forces in the area of Jangan-ri. Residents participating in the movement sh0owed the characteristic of giving the priority to being anti-Japan rather than the religious system. However, it is questionable to understand or construe the march 1st movement in terms of prejudiced religion.
Fourth. it showed the characteristic of orienting an aggressive line in terms of struggle. When considering the march 1st movement, the peaceful demonstration is commonly referred to. However, a Japanese police officer known as Noguchi was killed on 29th of March in the area of Songsan-myun and another Japanese police officer known as Kawabada was killed in the area of Hwasu-ri, Hwaseong. This aggressive movement may be construed to correspond to the armed struggle in the areas of Manchuria and Russia. Fifth, these background of participating in the movement was directly related to actual issues such as the oppression by the police station in Hwasu-ri. Lots of residents were frequently mobilized for landfill work of wetlands for its geographical characteristic of being located in coastal area. Also, reclamation projects driven by the Japanese private sector were frequently performed. These issues caused the residents in the areas of Sokpo-ri and Suchon-ri to participate in the movement. Reclamation projects in the areas of Sokpo-ri, Jugok-ri, Gusulwon, Suchon-ri and Bangchuk-dong driven by the Japanese people angered the residents greatly.
