This paper examines the procedures concerning making ink rubbings from epitaphs for deceased royal families as reflected in "the records of superintendency for a royal funeral" entitled Kukjang togam Uigwe (國葬都監儀軌). The ink rubbings made for one of the royal funerary rites contain biographies of royal families such as a king, queen dowager, and crown prince. The original source of ink rubbings, the funerary inscriptions (誌石) were carved onto the square pieces of stone and placed in the tomb. It was perceived as an important ritual and documentary monument at court. Before being placed in the tomb, it was rubbled with ink on paper, then the paper was kept in the royal storehouse. Such ink rubbings of royal funerary inscriptions enable us to investigate specific features concerning their shapes, record, and other ample sources: the process of making ink rubbings, materials, and workers.
In general, the ink rubbings of royal funerary inscriptions were made by complicated methods shows well the high elaboration of royal documents. A process of making ink rubbings was broadly fallen to the eight stages from selecting the stone to bestowing them on officials. In addition to it, this paper deals with a process of making the stone for royal funerary inscriptions.
The procedures of selecting stone, grinding them, copying characters, and engraving them on the grinded stone were well documented in the records of royal superintendency. In order to make them, several officials charged with the all process accompanying an amount of materials and many labors. Nevertheless, it is still hard to erudite the procedures concerning printing and mounting of the ink rubbings. A large part of various items and the names of materials employed for the works were also veiled. Perhaps these ambiguities were caused by the condensed writing system of the records of the royal superintendency, however, they will be the subject of the further study.
