The Intellectual's Thoughts on the Cooperation among the Three East Asian Countries in the late 19th Century(Cho, Jae-Con)
In the later half of the 19th, Korean, japanese and Chinese Intellectuals suggested that the three East Asian countries should unite in order to overcome the threat of Western Powers. Many scholars paid attention to the theory of solidarity among the three countries, so that this theory is closely related with the historical theme. This study aims to examine the ideas of intellectuals that had to be the movement to , enlighten and civilize' country.
At that time, intellectuals claimed that the cooperation among the three countries could save East Asia from the threats of Western Powers, and most of intellectuals were impacted on the modernized japan. Especially, Kim ok-kyun and his colleagues had to be adapted the japanese movement to 'enlighten and civilize' such as Fukuzawa Yukichi. Kim ok-kyun and his faction wanted to establish the country to be 'enlighten and civilize'. Therefore, they needed to adopt japanese political concepts and institutions. However, Kim ok-kyun was to be insufficient the concepts of the modernization and to be short the more progressive supports.
After that, Yu kil-chun and An kyong-su also claimed the solidarity among the three countries to realize peace in East Asia. Yu kil-chun had a hopeful view of the japanese; he had no idea to overcome the crisis. Eventually, he was an intellectual of weakness. Moreover, An kyong-su insisted on defense alliance with japan to protect East Asia from Western Powers. The problem, however, was to lead the japanese expansive ambitions in Korea.
In the late part of 19th century and early part of the 20th century, most of Korean intellectuals had idea of the cooperation among three countries. The problem was the differences in the historical experiences and situations of the three countries. These differences led to a fundamental difference in the political purposes and intentions of Korean intellectuals with those of japanese intellectuals. Many intellectuals wanted to be 'enlighten and civilize' country. Eventually, Korea was forced colonization by the japanese. So intellectuals, claimed the solidarity among the three East Asian countries, were not seen the looks on affirmation.
