Kim Myeong-soon is the one of woman writers in the early stage of the Korean modern literature. She wrote not only poem and novel but also two dramas. Nevertheless, she didn’t become known as a drama writer. Moreover, she exhibited only her unfortunate life derived from the agony of privacy and its failure in love by the confessional writing style until now. So In this article has the purpose that it will find out her position in Korean modern drama history in where her works had forgotten and erased in there.
At that time, it was popular making of subject as individualism. It was most a tendency. However, she was different that her works have a special character New Woman. Indeed, in her dramas, heroines killed by themselves in the end which revealed the pre-modern obstinacy of the days. In other words, they wanted to find true love. The love was platonic or spiritual love. These tendencies can show that it can criticize effectively the modern enlightening Civilization.
Her dramas have the important meaning in modern dramatic history, in that it dealt with the formation of a new modern subject. Especially, the fact that the individualism was represented as the central ideology in modern society must be highly estimated. That made very important and contradictory situations to her works because she tried to Symbolism against Naturalism but her attempts could not complete. That’s why we can find out tendencies of Symbolism like the sorrow mood and idealization of death but we can not recognize the perfect Symbolism drama as in her works.
Through her dramas we can realize that she try to write the Symbolism drama at that time. It was rare in Korean modern drama history but also her position is in the genealogy of Korean anti-realism drama.
