The formation of the modern languages in Korea and Japan has been equated with the discontinuation of the use of the Chinese writing system or Chinese Kulturkreis, which had ruled the literary systems of the countries over the centuries. The modernization in both countries refers to secession from Sinocentrism. In fact, the elimination of Chinese characters from the vernaculars was a prerequisite to the formation of their native modern languages. This move relies upon the logic of language nationalism, that is, preserving 'purification' and 'authenticity' of their native languages by rejecting Chinese characters as foreign characters. In this vein, it is worthy of examining the changes which had been brought by such modernization carried out by the East Asia regions. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of retaining Chinese characters as well as their role in the future language systems in the region of East Asia. In this investigation of the future scope of Chinese characters, a focus is placed on the aspect that Chinese characters have served as the common basis for East Asians mentality.
A belief in the superiority of the vernacular over foreign languages grows with a rise of nationalism. From a perspective of this nationalism, foreign language influence in the vernacular is often seen as contaminating the native language. Despite the fact that Chinese characters are considered as being completely assimilated to the vernacular, the principle of the abandonment of the use of foreign language is still being applied to Chinese characters. This principle was first advocated by Motoori Norinaga, a philosopher in the Edo period. However, it is time to overcome the exacting idea that all foreign characters or words should betargeted for elimination and replacement by pure native language.
It is essential to recognize the cultural basis shared by these countries beyond their boundaries. From this stance, the countries in East Asia, which hold to one common morality can consequently be seen as one cultural community, should seek for a way towards symbiosis. It is possible to find the way via examining Chinese characters. Chinese words or Chinese writing system.
