I have examined the lotus design roof-end tiles with dividing lines which had been prevailed throughout the Koguryo dynasty. And I have made close observations of the shapes (and changes) of lotus flower, ovary, and border lines.
I found that there are some differences in shape among the design elements of the lotus design roof-end tiles discovered in different pans of the country. And I first classified them according to the presence of the connections between dividing lines and border lines: type A is not connected, type C is connected. Then I classified them according to the forms of lotus flower, ovary, and dividing Lines: type Ⅰ(Ia, Ib, Ic), type Ⅱ(IIa, IIb), type Ⅲ(IIIa, IIIb), and Ⅳ.
I knew that type A is the form of the roof-end tiles discovered in Jian and type C is the form discovered in Pyongyang. Therefore, whether the connections between dividing lines and border lines exist or not depended mainly on local differences, not on temporal differences.
The shape of lotus on the roof-end tile represent the lotus bud. The form appear to ginkgo nut type and boat type. And the rising lines is described at d1e inside of the lotus buds. By the passage of time, the rising lines had been moved to outside, and changed into the edge line of the lotus flower. This implies that the shape of lotus flower had changed from ginkgo nut type to boat type.
Also I found that there is a high correction between type C and boat type. On that account, the shift in form from type Ⅰ to type Ⅱ, from ginkgo nut type to boat type is relative to the transfer of the capital to Pyongyang. Thus we could conclude that type Ⅰ appeared in the mid 4th to mid 5th centuries and type Ⅱ in the mid 5th to early 6th centuries.
After the transfer of the capital to Pyongyang, the form of ovary and inside border line began to change. First, the number of border lines had been reduced from two to one. Then lotus pip design, radial design, etc. were represented within the ovary. This change in form from type Ⅱ to type Ⅲ occurred in the early-to-mid 6th century.
Type Ⅳ appeared in the 7th century. Lotus pip design, radial design, etc. disappeared, and dividing
