This thesis is to inquire into Toegye's orientations as a retirement gentleman of Dosan, how his aesthetic consciousness in his life of retirement is revealed, and how the Principle of Heaven which he tries to clear up is contained in his poems, by making the 18 poems among Dosanjabyeong which are enlisted in the third volume of『Toegyeseonsaengmunjip』as a object of study. The results are as follows.
Firstly, Toegye‘s retirement in view of a consistent mind of a retirement gentleman orients for an unwealthy but proud Confucian life, for upbringing a disinterested and generous spirit, for harmonizing with nature, and for modelling after the past wise scholars who pursued a state of non-self, and perceived faith and reliability.
Secondly, to make a long story to short, his true sense of retirement is a merging of self and thing. It has some qualities of being harmonized between the teachings of the wise and the tastefulness of nature on the basis of unselfishness.
Thirdly, the Toegye‘s poems which embody the Principle of Heaven give an emphasis on the lightening of the principle through the original text, and then on its practice. This means that his poems incline toward a Sung style which emphasizes the instructive function of poetry.
