The purpose of this study is to clarify the educational meaning of infant baptism and to sharpen its relativity to the education of the whole church community.
The validity of infant baptism had been a problematics of the theological issues in the church history, in which the standpoint of opposers in the infant baptism (Fathers of the Church, Anabaptists and Barth) was disagreed with it of the defenders of infant baptism (St. Augustin, Calvin and Cullmann. and so on).
But the Bible discloses the unambiguousness of the infant baptism in various ways. Above all, the circumcision in the Old Testament is the model of infant baptism with its meaning as a symbol of a member of God's people.
In the New Testament we can find also some important references that support the necessity of infant baptism: the relationship of Jesus to children, the "household-baptism" etc.
The latest studies of developmental psychology in religion show that even the new-born baby from one's first days has the ability to trust and to have relation to others. Faith is the matter of the relationship, not of the thought. The baptism as an expression of God's grace and mercy doesn't and can't exclude any one who want to relate to God, not even an youngest baby.
The infant baptism, therefore, is the first time of the whole process of a personal faith development. Accordingly, it is the first step of the whole process of the Lifelong Christian Education for a person, in that one's parents and the church community participate together and share the responsibility of one's education together.
To accomplish this educational work effectively, the church needs to educate not only the parents but also all the members of the congregation on the infant baptism and its significance for the developmental process of faith.
For this purpose, especially, curricula for parents- and congregation education on infant baptism should be improved in relation to the whole life-cycle educational program in the church.
