This paper purposes to explain the traffic and transportation history in Yanggyae in roughly four aspects. Firstly, it describes a change of the traffic operating system in Yanggyae depended on the Northern situation during the regime of the King Seongjong. At this period, there was how to manage the traffic route taken a leaf from a system of the Tang dynasty, but the six graded classification system of postal stations was established to support the military defense system owing to military conflicts with the Northern race. Through this transition stage, 22 postal station circuit system is established during later the King Xuanzong.
Secondly, this study examines the postal station circuit in Yanggyae. It analyzes the name of postal station circuits to examine various formation processes and ranges of the postal station circuit. Because individual postal station circuits were formed before the establishment of Yanggyae's boundary, roads of postal station belonging to Yanggyae appear to have various formation processes and ranges. Also, the postal station circuit in Yanggaye, unlike that of the southern provinces of Gyeonggi-do, was used to the detachment and sphere of activity of local officials, and sequently it gradually changes into many meanings like an administrative district.
Thirdly, this paper examines uphill path in Yanggyae. The path between postal station circuits laid across a traffic rout on a mountain path cross over the pass. These uphill paths were installed to communicate between provinces, but were not easy to transport a large scale goods. For this reason, they had to depend on the marine transport to transport long distant provisions.
Fourthly, this paper describes a traffic point and range of transport service in Yanggyae. The several ranges of transport service formed around a point of land transport and a intersection of land traffic and water transport within Yanggyae. The range of transport service which formed around the terminal station of a long distance marine transport has something in common with that of the southern provinces of Gyeonggi-do founded around the rice-warehouse in that it is combined land transport with marine transport.
