The regional capital population in Korea had grown rapidly until the eighth century, decreased drastically in the late Unified Silla period, then increased slowly until the eighteenth century, and increased drastically in the twentieth century. The ratio of the regional capital population to the country's total population had increased until the eighth century, then decreased until the eighteenth century, and increased since the 1930s. The area incorporated to the capital city by economic relations has widened during the twentieth century. Though the regional capital population to the country's total population was very low, its share of urban population was not small, because urbanization was quite low, during the Joseon dynasty. And Korean capital cities have never abandoned their primacy. They had developed as a political center until the eighth century, and grew as an economic city since the seventeenth century, and has grown as a world city since 1960s. That was the fundamental factor for the growth of capital cities in Korea. Seoul had grown as a commercial city in the first stage of the economic city, was transformed into an industrial city since the late nineteenth century, and has grown as the hub of service since the late 1970s. Korean history has the characteristic that the large primary capital cities have lasted since the seventh century. The process of urban growth in Korea is similar to that of Europe in that political centers formed and developed in the ancient time, local cities proliferated in the middle age, and cites developed as economic centers in the early modern period.
