In this article, the changes that have occurred over the years involving the internal structure and areal composition of the Shilla dynasty's capital city is examined.
During the early days of the Shilla dynasty, the Kings resided. Geumseong inside the Gyeongju Eubseong(local fortress) or in the nearby area. Later the residence was moved to the Weolseong fortress(palace) located in the hill areas of Inwang-dong.
In the so-called the early ancient period(上古期), the members of the Royal family or the governmental officials lived around the Geumseong or Weolseong areas, and arranged tombs in the area as well. Agricultural lands were located in nearby areas of rivers or swamps.
Then during the middle ancient period(中古期), certain changes were made to the traditional feature of the inside of the capital city. The Royal family members and the officials constructed their tombs in the outskirts of the Gyeongju capital city(tombs with stone chambers constructed in a horizontal fashion). They also newly established Buddhist temples and governmental offices in the center area of the capital.
After the unification, King Shinmun reduced the size of the capital city, reestablished the boundaries of the capital to those featured by the Gyeongju city today. He also reorganized the inside of the capital based on Bang(坊) units. The capital city was restructured with roads straightly running from East to West and North to South. And inside the Bang units, structures were erected under strict regulations indicated by the Golpum(骨品)―based restrictions in terms of sizes, utilities and decorations.
Then in the later period(下代), noble Houses started to feature a general habit of constructing huge residences, which were referred to as Geumib-taek (金入宅) residences, and as a result the standardized nature of the Bang units were seriously crippled. The subsequent, explosive population increase also forced the capital city to continue expansion, and the inner districts were starting to lose order.
