The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of body composition and physical fitness, blood components, pulmonary function according to exercise habit and cigarette smoking. The subjects consists of 428 adult males, aged between 40 and 49 years old, were divided into two groups and sub-group: those who non-smoked cigarettes (n=217) consist of regular exercise (n=79) and non-exercise (n=138), and who smoked cigarettes (n=211) consist of regular exercise (n=62) and non-exercise(n=138). Body composition variables consist of body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), %body fat, fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM). Physical fitness variables consist of step test, push-up, sit-up, grip strength, sit and reach, vertical jump and side step. Blood component variables consist of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low density lipoprotein (LDLC) and fasting blood glucose (FBG). WHR and FM in smoker was higher than non-smoker (p<0.05). Push-up, sit-up, and side-step in non-smoker was higher than smoker (p<0.05). But, these variable was no significant difference according to exercise habit. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the step-test, grip strength, sit-and-reach, and vertical jump between groups. Triglyceride in smoker was higher than smoker (p<0.05). But, TC, HDLC, and LDLC in non-exercise group was higher than regular exercise group (p<0.05). Forced vital capacity in non-smoker was higher than smoker (p<0.05). The results suggest that the negative effects of cigarette smoking has different effect according to exercise habit on muscular endurance, %fat and lipid profile. In contrast to the above findings, there are no significant differences between smoker and non-smoker on BMI, grip strength, sit and reach, vertical jump, FBG and FEV1.0, FVC (%). Otherwise, it is necessary to demonstrate the relationships among number of daily smoking, duration of smoking, quantity of exercise, and quality of exercise.
