Two known biographies written about Bodeok-a monk during the Goguryeo dynasty-are those written by Choi Chi-won and Kim Bu-shik, Choi Chi-won wrote biographies about Ouisang and Bodeok. In his work on Bodeok, Choi attempted to demonstrate how the Gosutyeo dynasty had collapsed because of its rejection of Buddhism. In addition, in his biography on Ouisang, Choi argued that Shills had finally succeeded in unifying the three dynasties because Buddhism prospered in Shills. For his part, Kim Bu-Shik appears to take issue with Choi Chi-Won's description of Bodeok. Above all, Kim Bu-Shik recognized the fall of the Goeuryeo dynasty as having been caused by the internal conflicts that raged within the leadership group. Moreover. Kim also took exception with Choi Chi-Won's literary style. which he argued was similar to Jeong Ji-Sang'ls. While Kim had a profound knowledge of Buddhism, as is evidenced by his writing of the Daegakkuksabimun, it appears that he decided to write the biography of Bodeok because of his dislike for Choi's mysterious descriptive style.
The Yeongaesomun the prime minister (Daemakriji) during the regime of king Bojeng in the Goguryeo dynasty balanced hard-line and amicable policies in his diplomatic approach toward the Tang dynasty. The reason why the Yeongaesomun introduced Taoism from the Tang dynasty was to establish amicable relationship with the latter. As such, the Yeongaesomun did not intend to abolish Buddhism. Rather, he intended to develop the three religions equally: Confucianism. Buddhism, and Taoism. However, his policy irritated the Buddhists, who were one of the vested powers, especially the group whose leader was Bodeok. In his lecture on the Sutras of Nirvana. Bodeok compared the Yeongaesomun to an Ilcheonje (Icchantika) which basically means a person who does not have Buddha's spirit or who has not shed his earthly desires while emphasizing that such an Ilcheonje could not enter Nirvana after death.
As a result Bodeok was purged by the Yeongaesomun and moved to Godal Mountain in 650. However, Choi-Chi-Won argued that Bodeok did not move to Godal Mountain until 667. Emphasizing the fact that the Goguryeo dynasty had collapsed because of its rejection of Buddhism, Choi argued that the year 667, which was the year that Gyeongbok temple was completed, should be seen as the year Bodeok moved to Godal Mountain. For his part. Ouicbeon accepted Choi's assertion, while Ilyeon strived to connect the fall of the Goguryeo dynasty with Bodeok's move to Godal Mountain. by referring to various documents that had been left from that period in order to account for the years between the years 650 and 667. Bodeok who moved to Godal Mountain in 650 appears not to have been active in the Jeotiju area. This is supported by the fact that the temples built by Bodeok's followers were limited solely to the Jeonbuk area.
