In this thesis, I’ve analyzed the symbolism of Hwang seok woo’s early poetry. Through this, I tried to figure out the main idea, in his poetry, laying emphasis on a speaker in his poems responding to estrangement between real and ideal world. At first, I investigated the frequency of using main terms of his poems. I chose ‘Sun’ as the term which reflects an ideal world, ‘Metal’ as a real world, and ‘the Disabled’ which stands for human beings who react to separation between real and ideal world. From this, I deduced a symbolic meaning.
In his early poetry, ‘Sun’ stands for his lost homeland, which is a source of vitality. It is later changed into sunset and girlfriend and it is underlined as a being to be resurrected through erotism. 'Metal' destroys a speaker in a poem and means tensing real world. The image of ‘Metal’ is often combined with grotesque images, which creates his own unique aesthetics. ‘The Disabled’ means anxiety from a broken communication with the world. Paradoxically it reveals disability of the world.
Hwang seok woo desired for not only an independent country and the world which is filled with vitality but also dreamed of erotical resurrection. He, however, sometimes felt nervous about self-identity due to violence and vulgarity. But he had his own grotesque images and showed aesthetics of ugliness. Hwang seok woo sincerely tried to have resurrection through erotism in his poetry. His poems were not the decadent poem meaning separation and demoralization. It is currently meaningful that the method, ‘symbol’, as one of the literary device is richly used.
