The Apophatic theology is one of the core topics in Spiritual Theology. Studying God through negation, the Apophatic theology has opened up a ground for potential dialogues between Eastern Religion and Modern Philosophy. In order to understand the Apophatic theology, I shall study the works of Denys. In Denys's Corpus, we can recognize the culmination of the apophatic way. He employs the maneuvers of the apophatic way which are privation, abstraction, and apophasis. In particular, through the phrase 'beyond every denial' he reject seven the assertions of negation as he strives to grasp God from beyond the language of being. However, he does not deny God Himself, but he denies every term which regards God as a being. In spite of his thorough use of negation through double negation and negation of negations, he yet maintains the divine in a positive aspect throughout his Corpus.
In this study, I explore Deny's Apophatic theory in three sections.
In first section (Ⅱ), I examine relationships of metaphysics in Neo-Platonism which is the source of Denys's understanding of the universe and human beings. In second section, I discuss the nature of Deny's apophatic theory and also investigate specifically the process of Spiritual alleviation through observing his analysis of the Apophatic theory and development. Lastly, I point out the characteristics and qualities of Denys's Apophatic theory that differentiates it from other theories. Through these points I hope to suggest a way in which the Spirituality can be improved in Christian Spiritual Theology.
