This paper is the first analysis and assessment of the 1023 basic vocabulary words which will be used in the 2007 revised high school Japanese education. The main points are; firstly, to examine whether the current 1023 high school Japanese educational basic vocabulary items are satisfactory enough to learn Japanese in comparison with other foreign language's basic vocabulary coverage. Secondly, to analyze the features of the 1023 basic vocabulary words when compared with the Japanese basic vocabulary list from the part of speech and semantic field viewpoints.
The results are; in the case of Japanese, which has a low basic vocabulary coverage compared to other foreign languages, 1023 words are vastly insufficient in number, and in the case of the part of speech, it is shown that verbs are insufficient and there are more adjectives and interjections when compared with the Japanese basic vocabulary list. Also, in the case of the semantic field, vocabulary items that belong to fields such as 'instrument' and 'product' appear frequently, so it can be pointed out that there is room for improvement.
