The aim of this study is to classify the vocabulary in communication based on text functions and to define the direction of the vocabulary instruction in Korean education. It is necessary to understand the objective meaning structure and external situation of the text based on communication. Of all things, the vocabulary is a fundamental element to convey the main concepts. And the demonstrative pronouns, conjunctors, pragmatic particles etc acted as cohesive marker at the entire hierarchy of the text. Additionally the vocabulary can convey the information on communication participants and situational context. The direction of the vocabulary teaching with this function of the vocabulary is as follows. A) In selecting the vocabulary for instruction, the social-cultural meaning is considered to be important. B) In teaching the vocabulary meaning, the situational context meaning as well as the orthographic meaning is focused. C) In teaching the vocabulary, it is important to teach the meaning relation of various vocabularies than to teach the vocabulary apart. (D) In teaching the markers, the concrete and systematic teaching process should be taken.
