Since their immigration to Britain around the sixteenth century, gypsies have been represented in most literary works as social outcasts or pariahs that would absorb all the negative attributes of mainstream cultures. If the stereotypical gypsy images in the eighteenth-century literary works were mostly thieves and kidnappers, in nineteenth century, gypsies were portrayed mainly as idle vagrants who neglected social responsibilities and were thus completely free from any kind of restraints. In these cultural contexts, Romantic poets including Cowper, Wordsworth, Keats, and Clare, all wrote about gypsies. But their gypsies do not represent the original ethnic group; the gypsies in their poems function only as a metaphor, a vehicle that could absorb each poet’s anxieties as well as desires, particularly with respect to the ‘idle’ lifestyles they led as poet. In the process of representing gypsies in their poems, poets’ guilty feelings as an idler as well as their personal desire for independence and freedom as an individual were projected into constructing their own images. As a result, gypsies were sometimes portrayed as idle thus irresponsible vagrants, while they sometimes appeared as ‘mysterious,’ ‘unknowable’ beings closely connected with nature. This paper analyzes these images represented in some poems by Romantic poets, especially Cowper, Wordsworth, Keats, and Clare.
