In the period of the Chosun, the peculiar class called "the Middle Class'(the Chungin) began to appear on the stage of history. On this new class is the focus of this study placed.
The aims of this thesis are to make clear the development of the Yeghak and Yeuhag education.
This thesis is composed of four parts. The first part is composed of the concept, the formation period, the background, the socil position, and the concept of education, of the middle class. The second part is composed of the kinds, and the development, of the middle class education. The third part is composed of the analysis of the shift of the middle class's social position, and the relation between the middle class education and the social position shift. The fourth part is composed of the appearance of new social forces as a result of the middle class education, and the conclusion of this thesis.
The thesis is studied on the basis of many kinds of literature in Chosun, such as the Chronicles of the Chosun, the name books of passers in the state examinations, and so on.
The conclusion of this thesis are as follows.
First, the concept of the middle classes education was more precisely defined as 'the education intended to raise the middle classes by teaching them the professional knowledge and expert skills by the faculty of middle class masters who began to appear as a new social status in the early part of 17th century.'
Second, the close relation between the social change and the educational policy was clearly revealed. The number of the official interpreters, the official arithmeticians was changed in proportion to the social need for them For example, in the reign of King Go-jong, the number of official arithmeticians was much larger than that of any other field. This was why in this period society needed the large-scale measurement of land.
