Till now, lots of findings have been produced by the studies of Silla’s 5 vice-capitals and Balhae’s 5 capitals, which still seem to have so many limitations that they have not yet determined even the locations of some capitals. Nevertheless, considerably various facts have been found whether though land registration maps or through earth surface or excavation surveys of each capital. Accordingly, it is necessary to review the capitals comprehensively on the basis of such data. It seems that one of such combined projects is the very restoration of the capitals’spatial structures.
Specifically, each Silla’s capital may have had a structure similar to North Wei-style capital structure or have had a whole structure which encompassed another area’s structure somewhere in a capital’s zone, according to a viewpoint on the location of government site. Or the capital may have a spatial structure separated and completely different from that of each administrative zone. Accordingly, an accurate understanding indispensably requires making a full-scale excavation survey of an area that is considered as a place with its government offices. This is because the mere land registration map or topographic map makes it impossible to get any answer.
On the contrary, it seems unreasonable to see West and East Capitals in Balhae merely as Fortress Seogo and Fortress Pallyeon. Judging from its scope or structure, Fortress Seogo or Fortress Pallyeon should be regarded as a form of government site. This means that it is necessary to search for the remains associated with a capital in its neighborhood, considering a view that there may be another outer fortress outside a fortress. This indicates that it is necessary to make an additional survey of neighboring areas in the future. In addition, it seems necessary to make a full-scale examination of the differences in class between Metropolis Sanggyeong’s palace zone and other capitals in terms of structure and scope, though 5 capitals were referred to. As far as a comparative study of Silla’s five vice-capitals and Balhae’s five capitals is concerned, it will not be impossible to fully examine them until the problems mentioned above are solved.
