Contemporary Korean means the Korean language of the 20th century. The period of Contemporary Korean, which began at Kabogeongjang(1894) and covers throughout the 20th century to the present. could be divided into three terms.
- The first term (l894-the end of 1910s):
the formulating period of Contemporary Korean
- The second term (the beginning of 1920s-1945):
the establishing period of Contemporary Korean
- The third term (1945-the present):
the growing period of Contemporary Korean
During the first term, the Korean language still maintained the properties of Modern Korean period even though several new grammatical elements were formulated. For example, the use of '-ki' nominalization increased and many derivative words were newly formed reflecting the rapid change in lifestyle. Tense became a stable grammatical category, and the syntactic formatives tended to be used more in the formation of passives, causatives and negation etc. Also, in written materials, conjoined sentences of some length are often found.
In the second term, the Japanese language affected almost all aspect of Korean including morphological properties and phrasal structures etc. In addition to the use of stereotypical conjoined sentences formed with '-ni', the use of simple sentences started to increase during this period, and various types of complex sentences came to take shape.
Even though Korea was unfortunately divided into two language areas in the beginning of the third term, the Korean language is under steady progress. In the formation of complex words, the number of words which are formed against existing formation rules are increasing and loan words from English and other languages are used more. Also, the syntactic expressions in passives, causatives, negation, nominalization and future tense etc. are found more often than their morphological counterparts.
