The purpose of this study is to gather notions, functions, and teaching methods based on the data from the needs analysis to design a notional-functional syllabus for middle school English courses in Korea. For this study a survey was conducted with a total of 310 questionnaires, which 240 students, 35 parents, and 35 teachers completed. This study has found that the following have high degrees of need: ① communicative notions such as hobbies and interests, internet, computer games and MP3 player, thought and opinion, ② communicative functions such as expressing gratitude, interest, liking and disliking, ③ teaching methods such as pair and group work, bingo game in which students use words, and information gap activities etc. They can motivate students to learn English and improve their communicative ability, because students want to learn about them. Therefore, this study concludes that a helpful notion-functions of the teaching method should be integrated in the syllabus. The existing textbooks can be improved by applying the result of this study.
