This paper examined the meaning of historiography and it's limitation of "Studies in the Agrarian History of the Late Yi Dynasty" written by Kim Yongs?p. The author had studied internal development in the late Joseon Dynasty from 1950's. His purpose was to overcome the theory of stagnation of Joseon society and theory of heteronomy in Joseon History. In order to achieve these purposes, he analyzed Yangan(Land Register), farming manuals and agricultural technics.
The author argued the development of agricultural technics from the early Joseon Dyansty to the late Joseon Dyansty. He presented wide-apread of rice transplantation technic in paddy field and furrow seeding technic in dry field in the late Joseon Dynasty. He implicated surprising development of these two technics in the late Joseon Dynasty. But we also pay attention to his mention that agricultural technic developed gradually step by step and restricted by local condition.
The author dealt with the state of tenant farmer and tenant-landlord relationship. His basic material is a 1830 yangan of Yongdong-gung for the area of Kobu. He focused well-to-do tenant farmer who added tenured land to his own possession to enlarge their business. At this time we reinvestigated the characteristics of a 1830 yangan of Yongdong-gung for the area of Kobu. Therefore we found that it is impossible to explain the state of tenant farmer and tenant-landlord relationship from this yangan, because this yangan possessed only information about landlord. This Yongdong-gung yangan was not concerned in tenants.
The author explained the meaning of Nongseo(farming manual) from the point of agricultural idea. He drew a sharp line between Neo-Confucianistic standpoint and anti-Neo-Confucianistic standpoint. In addition he focused on intellectuals living in counry rather than Nonong(old farmer) engaging in farming through lifetime. We have better to pay much more attention to Nonong(old farmer) engaging in farming through lifetime.
