Recently, the Korea-China Underwater Tunnel has been proposed by some politicians and scholars based on the belief that it will contribute in enhancing the future economic cooperation between two countries. Related local governments, Kyunggi Province in Korea and Snadong Province in China, have been much interested in constructing the underwater tunnel. With this in mind, the paper has attempted to empirically investigate the expected spatial impacts of the tunnel using the economic potential model.
It has been turned out that the Korea-China underwater tunnel will contribute to increase the economic potential of the two depressed regions, namely Gwangjoo Metropolitan Area and Daegu Metropolitan Area. As a result, the underwater tunnel will help in promoting balanced regional development between the Capital Region and the Non-Capital Region. To expand the spatial impact of the tunnel, it has been argued that a new high speed rail or express highway, linking the tunnel and the retarded areas, is needed to increase accessibility.
