Due to its permeation in human cognition and language use, metaphor has been and can be effectively employed for constructing social reality and political ideology.
This paper explores how political leaders metaphorically conceptualize vague and abstract political notions (target domain) by virtue of more concrete and graspable terms (source domain). Based on data gathered during the 1997 Kenya General Elections, this paper particularly delineates how social reality and political ideology are constructed metaphorically by political leaders in order to accomplish their intended goals.
The critical analysis of metaphorical conceptualizations in political discourse raises some important questions related to a considerable disparity between conventional mentality deeply embedded in socio-cultural practices and the introduction, if not imposition, of modem political norms and institutions. For the propositional content of what is said to be decoded and for a speaker's communicative intention to be duly inferred, the use of metaphors presupposes that addressees commonly and habitually share some cultural, experiential and interactive conventions, and have a cognitive capacity to make inferences. In the light of the foregoing, an investigation of metaphors in a wider socio-cultural context is necessary.
Despite rapid change witnessed in social structure and human cognition, political leaders still resort to anachronistic source domains as a means of consolidating their vested interest. The legitimacy in anachronistic and arbitrary use of these source domains will be challenged in this paper.
Some studies (cf. Gastil 1992; Teeffelen 1994; Semino and Masci 1996) have empirically demonstrated that the critical analysis of metaphors employed in public discourse can be a useful device for debunking social injustice and deviated discourse practices. This paper corroborates attempts in previous studies to deconstruct undemocratic and even dehumanizing social practices through metaphors.
