From the second half of the twentieth century, African novels written in English began to be published. It is apparent that the emergence of novels in Africa is a result of the introduction of the Western literary tradition. Therefore, the novel form was new to African writers. Many of them adopted the elements of African folklore into the novel.
Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart is probably the most widely read African novel over the years. One of the distinctive features in the novel is the writer's use of African folklore. Igbo traditional proverbs, folktales and songs are observed in his text. The objective of this study is to illuminate the role of folklore in Things Fall Apart.
It is shown in this study that Achebe reexamined the image of his culture by introducing Igbo folklore in the novel. Furthermore the proverbs, folktales and songs inserted into the work serve as keys to understand the themes that the writer deals with.
