This article aims to analyze the characteristic features of gender order and hegemonic masculinity in Soviet Russia. Gender order means a constructed system of power relations between men and women, hegemonic masculinity ? gender identity which is oriented toward the dominant position of a particular group of men in society.
Such various factors as sociopolitical reality of the state, gender policy of the authority and gender consciousness of the masses played an important role in the formation of gender order in the Soviet society. Gender order in Soviet Russia could be characterized by its statism in that it was newly constructed, institutionalized under the strong influence of the Soviet state. At the same time gender order in Soviet Russia was permeated with traditionalism, from which neither the regime nor the people could be completely freed.
As well as Soviet gender order, hegemonic masculinity in Soviet Russia was constructed by many factors such as historical experience and memory, the necessity of the state’s mobilization of men and traditional perception among Russians. In accordance with Soviet gender order, hegemonic masculinity in Soviet Russia could be formulated as the male identity, in which Soviet men’s role as workers or soldiers, Soviet men’s activities like heroism and self-sacrifice were recognized as the highest values in the country. As this implies, the core of hegemonic masculinity is the maintenance and reinforcement of the male dominance in the society. This power-oriented nature of hegemonic masculinity inevitably engenders subordination and alienation of women and most men. And hegemonic masculinity in Soviet Russia was no exception in this respect.
