The purpose of this paper is to identify the issues that have emerged as important issues in the field of historical education in Russia from the time of the dissolution of the Soviet Union to the present day. As history education in the Soviet era was under state control, the situation changed rapidly in the field of history education after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, there were several perspectives for the purpose of history education. In the early stages, some scholars thought that the disciplined function of history education should be denied, but since 2000, the role of discipline in history education has been emphasized it as the main purpose of history education. However, rather than injecting a single national ideology in history education, as in the Soviet era, it is thought that history education should serve the functions of national integration and civic education. The discussion about the purpose of history education is reflected in the history textbook issue. The textbooks written in the Soviet period lost their usefulness after the Soviet Union was dismantled, and Russia has steadily made efforts to produce new historical textbooks since the 1990s. Now, rather than a single textbook, as in the Soviet era, history textbooks selected through open competition are being used. Nevertheless, it is pointed out that the political tendency is reflected in the textbook writing, especially on sensitive subjects related to the Soviet period. At present, there is the single state exam for graduates of schools in Russia. The exam initially included multiple choices but turned to measuring comprehensive historical thinking, and the answer scoring criteria were presented in more detail. It is true that some criticism of the single state exam is being raised, but the Russian government is expected to maintain this system in the future. As such, Russia can be said to deal with various issues in the field of history education while facing the upheaval of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
