This thesis concentrates on the story that emphasizes the sexual relation, concepts about sex, and sexual life in ‘Jilmaje village’ by taking notice on the text itself. We consider the aspect of their life and the way they cope with the manifestation of ‘sex’ and the result of that, and also consider their ways of understanding of ‘sex’
In 「Bride」, the bridegroom’s attitude ?his rash and thoughtless judgment about the bride in her point of view, the tolerant of her as a lewd woman by approving touching his hand, in his point of view, are both hardly acceptable. So, in order to understand the bridegroom’s attitude, we examine the sexual consciousness of people of ‘Jilmaje village’
In 「Gepi-cake made by the woman from Almoe」, the life styles of the woman from Almoe during the full moon and during the dark moon are entirely different. Likewise, the neighbors constantly change their attitude about her adultery between ‘understanding’ and ‘ignoring’. Although this ‘understanding’ and ‘ignoring’ could change according to the point of view, it could be seen as ‘understanding is ignoring’ and ‘ignoring is understanding’. All the town’s people had no choice but to admit that they shared the same natural impulses with the woman from Almoe
In 「Adultery and Well」, the people in the town hear gossip and make a fuss. It can be divided into two cases depending on the authenticity of the gossip. In both cases it supports the fact that the heavens had to have suffered. The people in ‘Jilmaje’ atone their sins for adultery by filling up the well. ‘Filling the well with hay’ is based on the premise of forgiveness of adultery after one year. It was the result of the town’s admittance of sexual impulse as natural instinct.
In 「Bride」, the bridegroom thinks the bride lewd. However, if we hear of the gossip ‘whose wife and whose husband had an affair’ and ‘the adultery committee the woman from Almoe’, we could understand the bridegroom’s attitude. The act of wrapping his arm around her 40∼50 years later can be seen as the tolerance and admittance of the people about their concept of sex. It would seem that everyone in town share the same guilt about adultery, and that this sexual impulse is not unique in an individual but universal.
