This paper aims to study the style of advertisement language in the modernization period (from 1833 to 1910) in Korea. Copy in advertisement shows the usages of language in daily life. That is the reason we are interested in advertisement language. I compiled and analysed the copies of advertisements from newspapers published in Korea from 1833 to 1910.
The style of advertisement language from newspaper often corresponds with the style of newspaper itself. Various letters are used in copies during that period Hangeul (한글, the Korean alphabet), Chinese characters (漢字), Kana (假名), and Alphabet. Those letters are chosen according to the target of advertisement, because each class mainly uses different letters to communicate. I classify the copies into four categories by the letters they are written: the Hanmun style which are written in Chinese literary style, the Hangeul-Hanja style which are written by Chinese characters and Hangeul, the Hangeul style which are written by Hangeul only, the English style which are written in English, and the Hangeul-Hanja-Kara style which are written by Hangeul, Chinese characters and Kana. Among these styles, the Hangeul style and the Hangeul-Hanja style me frequently used.
Most of advertisements promoted Japanese or foreign goods imported by Japanese companies, because Korean products were not much produced at that time. Therefore, the form and style of Japanese advertisements had influenced on those of Korean advertisements.
