Deconstructive or poststructuralist in its approach, this article attempts to explore the rhetorical nature of Chunhyangjeon (Fragrance of the Spring), one of the most well-known Korean classic novels. It argues that the novel abounds with strong rhetorical and figurative strategies, such as metaphors, similes, bathos, anticlimaxes, allusions, malapropism, etc. - to name only a few. It is not too much to say that almost every word in a sentence or phrase from the book is rhetorical or figurative in nature. Thus the book can be defined as a collection of rhetorical or figurative language. This article further argues that these rhetorical devices in Chunhyangjeon have something to do with the origin of the novel, which derived to a great extent from Pansori, a curious combination of a story-telling and a musical performance. In addition, the article explores the way in which the author(s) of the novel tries to subvert its monolithic viewpoints or meanings by employing rhetorical strategies. The novel exemplifies what Mikhail Bakhtin called the carnivalesque - the expressive, anarchistic, individual viewpoint. Although language may be saturated with ideology, it never represents the one, monolithic viewpoint. One of traditional and widely accepted readings of Chunhyangjeon has been conflicts between upper and lower classes. These aspirations and endeavors are continually undermined by rhetoric, which, as Paul de Man strongly asserts, disperses meaning into myriad contradictory possibilities.
