The Studies on Japanese contemporary history have been changed since about 20years ago. The features of the changes can be summarized in the following three points: Diversity, manifoldness, and border transgression. Also history researchers' study methodology and attitudes have been greatly changed in the direction of placing more emphasis on the communications and comparisons. They have made points of differences and similarities, or clearly presented continuity and discontinuity, through of international comparatives and contrasts.
History study in Japan after the war was greatly influenced by Marxism, its features were one state centered historical conception, progressivism, and Eurocentrism. One of the most advanced studies on Japanese history after the end of the war is the imperialism study. The Studies on Japan's imperialism have been supported by sociological history, pedagogical history, and gender study. Japan's imperialism studies have argued about colonial modernity from various standpoints of post modernism, comparing with Western countries, knowledge and technology, and international political system.
The recent studies have kept a vigilant watch on East Asian Community. But It is crying out for getting over the one state centered historical conception in China, Japan, and Korea.
The subjects in carrying out researches on the modern history of Japan from hence, are to seek what was the meaning of the modernity or modernization in Japan. And it is desirable to be carried in the context of the frame of East Asia's modernity and a state-building in the colonial imperialism.
