This paper investigates the effects of price and non-price competitiveness of Korean export products as evaluated by overseas buyers on overall export performance using the ordered-probit model. The paper also examines whether any significant discrepancies existed between the evaluation of overseas buyers and Korean export businesses on the price and non-price competitiveness factors such as quality, on-time delivery and brand image.
The results show that there is a significant positive relation between the price and non-price competitiveness of export products and overall export performance. The study affirms the fact that the higher buyer satisfaction on such elements as price, quality, and supplementary services such as aftersales services is, the higher the probability become that they would purchase Korean products in the future. Also, the study finds a significant difference in the priorities that overseas buyers and Korean exporters placed when importing and exporting products. There is also a significant discrepancy in the level of satisfaction between overseas buyers and Korean exporters. In particular, overseas buyers shows a lower level of satisfaction with aftersales services, on-time response to buyer demand and the credibility of the exporter than as was self-evaluated by the Korean exporters. We therefore note that Korean exporters could effectively enhance export performance through efforts such as prompt response to buyer demand, aftersales services and acquiring the trust of buyers as well as through improving product quality and price competitiveness.
