Chinese soybean trade showed a very dramatic change during the 2nd half of the 20th century. China was the largest yielding and exporting country of soybean at the middle of 20th century, however, she became the largest importing country at the end. This study tries to write the whole story with the 1969-98 FAO Statistical Data.
The leading fact was the rapid increase of soy oil demand. Confronting with a substantial importing of soy oil, the government rather preferred importing soybean and crushing even if her domestic soybean supply was not sufficient for the crushing. As the result, China was bound to import a substantial quantity of soybean.
Though the domestic yield of soybean had been increased from the first half of the 1980s, her soybean import did not decrease. Moreover, her soybean export had expanded in the same time, and Chinese soybean import and export had been coexisting in a substantial quantity for several years. The main reason was that many crushing plants preferred imported soybean which was well sorted in quality.
With the opening of vegetable oil market in 1993, Chinese domestic soybean price started to fall and the profitability of farmers became worsen. This study suggested two points; The first, China needs a reasonable system for supplying one and the same quality of soybean which most crushing plants in China prefer. The second, Chinese government should enhance the cultivating environments of soybean for the farmers can get better profitability.
