Sakaguchi Ango's concept of 'fall' is understood as a decadence, which in a social context, is often used to refer to a caustic decline due to a perceived erosion of moral traditions. Hence, Ango has established himself as a pessimist whose indifference denied the wholeness of moral ideals that the society demanded.
His concept of 'fall', however, was interpreted in a varying way as a resistance against the reproduction strategy of community by Lin Shukumi. In other words, what Ango aimed at was not in opposition to an abstract moral, but an attack against the conservative ideology to distinguish private interest with that of public interest. However, It is overlooked that Ango's concept of 'fall' was not only the resistance against the system, but also an ironic turn to conform to it.
Indeed, he viewed culture as having inconsistent tendency between an opt for obliteration or obedience. In this sense, Ango's ideology is distinguished from the idea of intellectuals in the postwar democracy that all change was due to an overwhelming defeat. He also denied the seamless change of history and said that the history made progress slowly between the denial and obedience. In this regard, Ango's ideal contradicts the contemporary views of Maruyama Masao.
