This study used the solar patterns of the mural paintings in Goguryeo tumuli, the first solar patterns in Korea, to classify the types of solar patterns into ⅰ) auspicious birds standing in a circle with wings folded [Type Ⅰ], ⅱ) auspicious birds standing in a circle with wings spread in a semicircle [Type Ⅱ], ⅲ) auspicious birds standing about to fly off from a circle with spread wings [Type Ⅲ], and ⅳ) solar patterns consisting of circles [Type Ⅳ], and examined the changes in the types of solar patterns by period [Goguryeo, Goryeo, Joseon] from the viewpoint of transitions in world view.
As a result, this study confirmed that the 4 types of solar patterns of the mural paintings in Goguryeo tumuli were handed down to future generations in reflection of the different world views of different periods, and they looked different with the passage of time, but that the characteristics of birds of prey, such as the three feet and crows, were well reflected in the expression of auspicious birds for a long time.
Meanwhile, among solar patterns combining circles and auspicious birds, Type Ⅰ [auspicious birds standing in a circle with wings folded] can be found only in the mural paintings in Goguryeo tumuli of the early 5th century and the mid-6th century when Goguryeo had a firm independent world view, except for the few Buddhist paintings of late Joseon and monk's robes embroidered with the sun and the moon. The solar patterns of Type Ⅱ [auspicious birds standing in a circle with wings spread in a semi-circle] and Type Ⅲ [auspicious birds about to fly off from a circle] appeared in the years after the invasion of the Kitan, during Musin-jeongbyeon (coup d´etat of the military during the Goryeo dynasty), during the period of Yuan's intervention, Jungjong-banjeong (dethronement of King Jungjong), and during the period of Daehan Empire. It is noteworthy in that they appeared in periods when the invasion of foreign powers heightened the sense of independence or the legitimacy of the ruler was desperately needed. Perhaps, as the black auspicious bird of the same color as the crow signifying death is expressed in the red circular sun signifying life, the sun is not simply a symbol of Yang, but an object of eternity in which life and death are repeated. The solar patterns are thought to contain a message of hope that a bright world will come in the wake of difficult times like a national crisis or political confusion. Also, Type ⅠV solar patterns consisting of circles appeared mostly in periods when the pro- China tendency was reinforced or the small China ideology was commonplace.
The solar patterns, used as symbols of the royal authority and as decorations for the memorial service held before the grave, have served for us as a media reflecting the times including world view for a long time, and this study about solar patterns confirmed the fact that ‘culture is the vessel of the times.’ Also, it is believed that this study of traditional patterns like solar patterns, possessed of greater substantiality and objectivity than historical records which reflect the historical view of the historian, will be very instrumental and important in understanding the identity of the culture and historical traces of Korea.
