This study aims to examine the process and characteristics of the establishment of the modern thinking system by analyzing the change of ‘GyeokMulChiJi(格物致知)’, from the nineteenth century to the early era of the Great Han Empire(1880~1905), a period of modern reform of the country.
After the opening of ports to foreigners, the government of Joseon Dynasty adopted a measure to enrich and empower the country, based on the principle of Eastern Way-Western Means(東道西器). In the process of receiving Western technology, the traditional understanding of investing things and extension of knowledge(‘GyeokMulChiJi’ Theory) changed. People began to acknowledge the values of Western learning, called ‘GyeokChihak(格致學)’. Confucianism is still the foundation of the study but GyeokChiHak replaced by a scientific study of western modernity. Based on this change of understanding, efforts to establish new types of schools were made.
Around the establishment of DaeHanKookKookJe(大韓國國制) in 1899, the Great Han Empire’s ideology was decided. Gojong intended to institute a modern state system that was built around an absolute monarchy. To support it ideologically, he divided Eastern Way-Western Means into Confucianism and GyeokChi. He made Confucianism as a religion, adopting morals and ethics as a core of the religion. And he tried to enrich and empower the country using GyeokChi. But ‘GyeokMulChiJi’ Theory was no more the main current ideology. Gradually it was often used to persuade Confucian scholars. And the Confucian reformists reinterpreted Confucianism in order to help ordinary people develop independent and empowering spirit, using the method which was previously used to empower the spirit of Confucian scholars(士氣).
