The purpose of this paper is to promote a study of Bakhtine s chronotope concept, which has been in a dormant state, through a study of Rabelais s novels.
Bakhtine's theory of "time" in the genre of novels is very useful in a study of Ravelais' works, because Rabelais's novels deny functions of epic and begin to accept in a full scale the meaning of contemporary trends.
Rabelais denies thoughts of Medieval Ages and prophesizes an emersion of a new mankind in his works. Such new thoughts of contemporary "time" and "space" in Bakhtine's "chronotope" concept is much more effectively revealed in Rabelais's Gargantua and Pentagruel than any of his works.
The first step one has to take is to study a historical background of the concept of "chronotope", and a study of different types of "time" matters appeared in ancient novels have to be followed.
For a thorough application of Bakhtine's chronotope concept, an analysis of the elements required to construct Rabelais's world is the next project, and how each element nullifies Medieval Ages church ideologies has to be followed.
Simple deconstructions of "time" and "space", and prophesizing the coming of contemporary global concepts appeared in "chronotope" not only reveal Rabelais's world, but also they coincide with the orient thought of the world existed in a circular concept of time.
Through Rabelais's literary works, a thorough study on social functions of literature has become possible. That is, Flaubert's theory of literary works which foresees contemporary literature ultimately returns to the ideas of literature itself. Therefore, one can say that requiring rereading of Rabelais's works based on "time" and "space", no doubt, has already gained "modernity".
