This study aims to re-read "An Encounter" in James Joyce's Dubliners, comparing its narrative structure with that of the story of "Tower of Babel" in the Old Testament. This comparative reading proceeds in the light of the "Chronotope," which, according to Mikhail Bakhtin, enables the exchange between work and life, and constitutes the distinctive life of the work. The intertextuality of the chronotopes in literary works provides a reader with a possibility of a new interpretation or different paths leading to the same theme. In "An Encounter," just as in the other two childhood stories in Dubliners, the world of adults represents oppression, authority, and diverse kinds of violence. The children represent the impulse, the attempts and frustrations concerning romantic escape, and the attitude of awakening that follows. However, the chronotope of this story, which is in the same line with that of the story of the Tower of Babel, tells us a different story. The chronotopic reading of the story changes the hero with a romantic sensibility and resistive attitude toward the adults into the proud Jew, who built the Tower of Babel to reach God in Heaven, the boys' journey to the Pigeon House into the Jew's tower-building, and the confusion of their goal to reach the Pigeon House due to a strange encounter with "a queer old josser" into the confusion of languages to mar their attempt to reach God. Meanwhile, the dialogue between the two chronotopes produces the same theme: What man has to pursue is not blind absolute power, but humility and love, through which we can think much of the other. Or, on the other hand, as the New Testament says, "Reconciliation should precede the worship service to God."
