The historical development of (the historiography of) German literature is described not only by a diversity methodic-theorical premise, but also by various ways of functions including how history of literature effects the social, political and ideological backgrounds
In spite of this (discourse-typical), formal and methodic variety, always described the historiography of the history of German literature However an extensive, complex total-description has been a long time corning
Although it is relatively easy to describe the development of the methods in the history of literature, one should never forget the fact that, histories of literature with the same paradigm, even if they seem very similar to each other from a methodological point of view, usually make different judgements on one same object
One should also be aware of the "Gleichzeitigkeit der Ungleichzeitigen" The meaning of the concept of paradigm shift in reference to literature is, that the prevailing method is relieved by a new one. But in reality, the process of shifting from an old method to a new one, does not always happen in a straight line, as one may trunk
The transition mostly does not occur in a cutting way, where one part ends and another part begins. In practice, artificial shifting points are usually covered up and the out-dated methods remain in effect with the new one (for some time)
Furthermore, one should not leave out of consideration that, even though they are based on independent and innovative factors of their own, 'era-representing' methods are in many ways related to each other in terms of tradition and, also effect each other
The strict theory about extinction or Survival of an old method, meaning that a new method takes over, excludes the possibility of reverting the old methods, which occurs quite often.
