In 1920s, cultural life of Latin America depended exclusively on Europe, especially Paris and Madrid. Pablo Neruda stayed in Madrid for two years as a Chilean consul. This period constitutes the most meaningful time for Neruda in terms of his literature, ideology and personal history. This paper is to investigate how Neruda's life in Madrid affects the life of the poet from the periphery in the Core of Colony.
Personally the period of Madrid was the happiest time for Neruda. It formed a friendship with the poet group, Generation of 27 who led an crucial role in the Spanish Literary circle at that time. Neruda finally joined the main stream of the Spanish Literature rediscovering the Golden Age Baroque poets, Gongora, Quevedo, Villamediana etc. through the association with the Generation of 27 poets.
While Neruda was in the middle of "The Voyage In", as Edward Said calls, he did not fell into the major discourse of the Spanish literature. The Spanish Civil War gave Pablo Neruda the moment turning his concern from the major culture to the minority. Neruda's Madrid life as a peripheral elite implies that it was not submission to authority but harassing tactics to the very authority. In the case of Neruda, there are 3 main factors for him to maintain the healthy and creative literary vitality, not being a comprador writer assimilated into the central discourse in Madrid or being an exclusive insider haunted by the national fundamentalism.
First of all, in the literature respect, Neruda came to rediscover the main stream of the Hispanic Literature from the Baroque Literature in the Golden Age. Second, in the private perspective, Neruda had gotten the strong friendship with the Generation of 27 poets who had the strong feeling of solidarity and brotherhood beyond their own nationality. Third, in the aspect of ideology, Neruda shared the kindred spirit with the fellow poets, most of whom had the socialistic ideology, and he believed his times' calling of Literature.
In conclusion, Neruda's experience in Madrid can be depicted in every respect as the open space of freeing from any authority and cannon. Furthermore, it provided him with the great opportunity to enlarge his awareness and poetic search.
