Lots of studies are conducted on school violence or bullying since 1990. However, these studies didn't show consistency in their results such as definitions of school violence or bullying, offense rate, victimization rate, etc. Some of these studies seem to have methodological problems or limitations. So this paper tried to critically review previous studies of school violence or bullying focused on their methodological limitation and suggest more developed method.
1) Many studies of school violence showed the seriousness of school violence in Korea. But interviews with students showed that they didn't have the same idea with that of the studies. This gap may be caused by the definition or measurement of school violence. Many researches included violent behaviors that were not serious in their measures, and this brought high victimization rate in their results. So the paper suggests the use of strict definitions of school violence or bullying that can represent the real situation.
2) Victimization survey method was used to measure school violence in most studies since 1990. Usually all students in a class was interviewed together with questionnaire at the same time. Group interview with questionnaire can cause serious problems in victimization survey on school violence. In this case, victimization rate can be affected by the presence of violent students in a class. The data analyzed in this paper shows the sharp differences in victimization rate across the class depend on the presence of violent students. This paper suggest that careful consideration should be taken when group interview method are used to measure the school violence.
