Viewing the overcoming of the past in a global perspective, we can find differences and varieties among countries, because it depends on their own social and political contexts. Generally we can categorize its typology into three groups: the overcoming the past of Nazi, authoritarian dictatorship and real-existing socialist countries.
In case of overcoming the Nazi past, it was forced by the allies and was also accelerated by the cold war competition among western and eastern european countries. But it was also interrupted by the cold war system, because each country needed internal unification and economic cooperation with the fast developing West Germany. Rather, the overcoming of the past by the West Germans themselves and their hot debates since the late 1960s became the new and alternative model.
But in countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, Chile and Argentina, after the collapse of authoritarian dictatorship the course of overcoming the past was not as successful because the old power, especially the military, retained strong influences. In the case of overcoming the Nazi past, the procedure of truth-revealing and judicial punishment was possible, but in the case of overcoming the authoritarian dictatorship, only the first one was achieved. In this sense the overcoming of the past is a very politicized issue.
A especially notable point is that in many countries the memory of the nation was torn between the memory of resistance, and the memory of the public formed by the propaganda of former dictators. This slowed down the process of overcoming the past. Therefore nowadays the ‘Politics of Memory’ have become very important in order to develop democracy through overcoming the past.
