The purpose of this paper is to examine the matter of "sympathy," one of the most important issues in reading poetry, based on Buddhist psychology. To examine the matter of sympathy means to explore one aspect of reception theory and reader-centered criticism in literature; more specifically, it means to examine in depth the reality of readers' rather vague response that a poem is "good", "impressive", "appealing", or "touching".
In this paper, the source of sympathy is understood as coming from basically two concepts of Buddhist psychology. The first one is the self-centered ego that emerges from the seventh consciousness (manas consciousness) of the doctrine of mere-consciousness. The other is the transpersonal that transcends and exists beyond the self-centered ego. While the former forms a world of ego that differentiates, discerns, and judges, the latter forms a world of one mind and holistic mind that exists beyond ego.
The forms of sympathy generated by the self-centered ego include understanding, empathy, liking, being overwhelmed, and delight. The typical forms of sympathy that comes from the transpersonal beyond ego are acceptance, admiration, thrill, and being touched. Whereas the former seeks self-preservation, self-expansion and self-indulgence, the latter pursues self-reduction, self-releasement and deliverance. The former types of sympathy are temporary, unstable, and personal, while the latter ones are eternal, consistent, and universal.
Modem Korean poetry often fails to draw the sympathy of transpersonal, especially the state of being touched, which is its highest stage. Both poets and readers are accountable for such failure, but most importantly, it is because they have not yet fully realized, or understood the world of transpersonal beyond ego.
At this time of development of postmodernism and new forms of poetry writing, understanding and restoring the transpersonal world of one mind and holistic mind will help bring a significant change and improvement to modem Korean poetry.
