Empathy, a translation of the German word Einfühlung has been an important concept in contemporary society. Although the notion of empathy has a wide-ranging application, it has marked by ambiguity and elusiveness. There is no concensus on the definition of empathy among scholars. Moreover, the two distinct concepts of empathy and sympathy are often taken to be interchangeable. This practice has allowed for a confusion in our understanding of empathy.
The purpose of this article, therefore, is to try to clarify these two concepts. Briefly, empathy refers to the attempt of oneself to understand the experiences of another self. Sympathy refers to an awareness of the sufferings of another person as something to be alleviated. In essence empathy is a way of “knowing”. Sympathy is a way of “relating”.
I will summarize the histories of sympathy and empathy and draw some distinctions between them. By strengthening the distinctions between empathy and sympathy, I hope to encourage the study of what is truly empathy.
