This study reviews the empirical research on the love in adulthood to understand the developmental transition of the pattern and components, specifically the relationship of attachment between love, personality traits and love, sex differences in love. As a result, this review identifies the characteristics and pattern of love in adulthood has close relations with the attachment experiences in childhood. Sex differences in love is appeared, but inconsistent with sex-role stereotypes. Also, components of love are related to one's personality and self-esteem, but the relations of patterns of love with personality and self-esteem show inconsistent results. The change of love components during adulthood shows that intimacy and commitment rather than passion are important factors to maintain the marital relationships. Especially, commitment is a remarkable factor increased by marital years in Korean couples. This result has implications to understand the Korean couples' marital relationships.
