Nowadays university students in Korea are relentlessly facing uncertainties in the late-modern society and endless competitions in the neo-liberal regime; however, for them love, intimacy and happiness are very significant themes. Thus far, scholars have researched university students` love and intimacy from the perspectives of psychology, feminism, or consumerism. Little has been done from the cultural perspectives on love and happiness. This study aims at cultural analysis on love and intimacy of university students in relation to their happiness. It is timely and significant to analyze the social implications of happiness from university students` love experiences. What are socio-cultural factors of tension or conflict in their love relationships? How do they experience happiness in their real-love? In response to these questions, I utilize Swidler`s theory on cultural repertoire or toolkits, that is, habits, skills, and styles to be adopted to perform action strategies. After interviewing twelve male and female university students in M district in Seoul, I found the following results. University students tend to pursue “love myth” or “romantic love” repertories; however, it is often in tension with real-love repertories. Also, happiness and suffering coexist in their experiences. Problems of conflict arising from dating relationship can hardly be resolved by romantic love repertories. Therefore, the extension of cultural repertories is quite important to resolve couples` conflicts in their real-love by developing communication and trust based on socio-existential authenticity. Though mere emotional authenticity stemming from romantic passion might do harm to stable reciprocity in real-love, stable emotions based on interpersonal trust might lead to happiness and co-existence. Self-reflexivity plays a significant role in enlarging self-recognition in socio-existential dimensions in discourses on happiness.
