In Japan after the end of WWII, Koreans and Taiwanese who were freed from colonial rule came to be termed “Daisangokujin [Third Nationals].” The term was initially used by Japanese police, mass media, public officials, and politicians and later spread with its discriminatory connotations. The term is laden with the aversion and revulsion felt by Japanese at the time as a result of what they witnessed. The Japanese, who had been thrown into chaos by loss of the war, were now viewed with scorn by formerly subjugated peoples, and these peoples perpetrated “illegal acts” with impunity as they established black markets and committed other crimes. The view that Koreans in particular were disrupting the order of Japanese society was unduly exaggerated and publicized by use of the term “D aisangokujin” in press reports and various publications. Joined by existing discriminatory views, that view of Koreans entered deep into the collective memory of the Japanese. In recent years, the term “Daisanggokujin” has seldom been used, but the image of Koreans fostered by this term will continue to provide fertile soil for the birth of new discriminatory terms.
