The present study tries to research girls’ image described in the Grimm’s tales by focusing on selected 3 tales, which are 「Little Red Riding Hood」 , 「Summer- and Wintergarden」 and 「The Frog King」 where girls’ protagonists show their particular images and characters. Usually the heroines of fairy tales are known as obedient to their parents, helpful and self-sacrificing for other people. But the heroines in those tales have certain similarities, which can be criticised as they don’t obey their parents or break their promises and the princess in 「The Frog King」 even smashes the frog against the wall although it helped her. They do wrong in a certain way and they don’t earn happy-ending through their false behaviors. However they show some such characters as innocence, ignorance, naivety and impulsiveness which used to be considered as ideal images of children in the Romanticism. This paper will not insist that such images of heroins are the representatives of the girls in the tales of the Romanticism or of Grimm’s, but it is certainly related to the ideology of the Romanticism, which considered children new, glorified and idealized.
Fairy tales (Conte de fees) during the Enlightenment generally were written for the aristocracy and for the adults, so they reflected directly the reality of those days. In contrast, Grimm’s tales are regarded as timeless stories and being free from the concrete social and ideological backgrounds. But in this paper, it could be confirmed that Grimm’s tales are not absolutely independent of the ideology of the Romanticism but influenced by the social and historical circumstances when they were written down, although Brother Grimm originally intended to write down orally-passed-down tales without any reorganization. In this connection, it also can be comprehended that Grimm’s tales got revised on and on till the last version in 1857 which showed ideal images of children and family in the civil society of the Biedermeier.
