The purpose of this study is to find answers to the question what a fairy tale is for Perrault and for Andersen. The analysis of Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” and Perrault’s “Riquet of the Tuft” (Riquet à la Houppe)”, and the review of other literatures such as Andersen’s autobiographies and correspondences, show the similarities between Perrault’s and Anderson’s perspectives on a fairy tale as follows : ⑴ A fairy tale is to be read at the different levels of ages and social ranks. ⑵ A fairy tale is mostly the story of a dying child who is reborn as a hero or a spiritual leader. ⑶ The children in a fairy tale include the youth under 18, and the children living in the inner side of the grown-ups. ⑷ The birth of new life, as well as the birthdays celebrating the life, is the most beautiful fairy tale of all. ⑸ The contents of the tale is not as important as the creative minds of the writer. A fairy tale is not about the contents itself, but about the words of the storyteller echoing back from content to content. ⑹ A fairy tale should be interpreted as an allegory and a symbol as in the Bible. The writers should help the readers find the true meaning, wisdom and happiness revealed in the tales. ⑺ The fairy tale writers are the artists who help their readers find an invisible rope in their life that belongs to God. ⑻ The fairy tale writers are the ones who plant the seeds of emotion. At beginning, the seeds give the shoot of joy and sorrows, but eventually they bear the fruits of good emotions. ⑼ Love and acknowledgement of each other’s equal existence under the transcendent being is the great power to solve the problems and, that it leads to happiness [... and they lived happily ever after.] ⑽ The fairy tale writers are the ones preaching the happiness. The writers should guide their readers to open their eyes to see the beauty and the goodness. In conclusion, a fairy tale is the stories of the spiritual leaders who become enabled to see the spiritual rope linked to their lives which remain invisible to most readers. The subject of “spiritual leader” which Perrault and Andersen mutually suggested in their perspectives of fairy tales should be continually studied through further analysis and interpretation of the relevant literatures from now on.
